The coin is dedicated to 150th anniversary of Dmytro Yavornytsky (1855 – 1940), a historian, an archaeologist, an ethnographer, a specialist in folklore and a writer. Being a a person of versatile interests, Dmytro Yavornytsky devoted almost all his life to study the history of Zaporizhia Cossacks, which was crowned with "The History of Zaporizhia Cossacks" in three books.

On the coin obverse  the small State Emblem of Ukraine is depicted, above which there is 2005, the coin mintage year, under it - 2 ÃÐÈÂͲ, there are also inscriptions around the circumference: ÓÊÐÀ¯ÍÀ (above),  ÍÀÖ²ÎÍÀËÜÍÈÉ ÁÀÍÊ ÓÊÐÀ¯ÍÈ (beneath) and the Mint logo of the National Bank of Ukraine (right).

On the coin reverse there is a depiction of a portrait of Dmytro Yavornytsky, to the right: 1855/1940, his years of life is inscribed and on both sides there is a semicircular inscription: ÄÌÈÒÐÎ ßÂÎÐÍÈÖÜÊÈÉ.
