Commemorative coins of 10 and 2 Hryvnias denomination are dedicated to the only species of dormouse (eliomys quercinus) in the fauna of Ukraine, which is occasionally met in the coniferous-deciduous forests of plains, mountains and in the gardens of marshy woodlands and forest-steppe (Rivno, Kyiv and Cherkasy regions).
The garden dormouse is active at dusk and at night. In winter the animal is in hibernation till April. The nests are built mostly in hollows and among the roots of the trees. The preferable food is seeds of the trees, fruits, molluscs, insects, eggs, baby birds and small rodents. In the period from 1900 till 1980 there were found out only eight species of eliomys quercinus on the territory of Ukraine. In 1980 eliomys quercinus was included into the Red Book of Ukraine.
